Study time
Most people who study in a structured way need 3–8 weeks, depending on prior knowledge and how much time they put in per day. Legislation (part 2) often takes twice as long to learn as the other subjects, because it rests on memorising rules rather than on general common sense.
Waiting for a test slot
The big and frequently underestimated time thief is the wait for available test slots at Trafikverket, which varies widely by location and season. Book a slot as soon as you start approaching a pass in practice tests – you can almost always move to a later time if you do not feel ready, but you cannot conjure up an earlier one if you wait too long to book.
Medical certificate and the application window
The medical certificate may be no more than two months old when the application reaches Transportstyrelsen, so get it late in the process rather than at the start. Also keep the outer deadlines in mind: the application must arrive within three years of your first passed test part, and within one year of your passed driving test.
The fastest route versus the realistic one
The absolute fastest route, with no waiting times and no retakes, often takes 6–8 weeks. With normal waiting times for test slots most people end up at 2–4 months in total. Add a retake or two and it can stretch to 5–6 months – which is exactly why retakes, not studying, are the biggest time thief.
