Test fees, the medical certificate and the hidden cost of retakes – how to budget correctly from the start.
Knowledge test fees
Each part of the knowledge test costs 420 kr on weekdays before 6 pm, and 520 kr in the evenings and at weekends. Since there are two parts, a complete round of knowledge tests without rebookings lands between 840 and 1,040 kr depending on when you book.
The driving test fee
The taxi driving test costs 1,000 kr during the day and 1,400 kr in the evenings and at weekends. If you do not have access to a car that meets the requirements (dual controls for the service brake among them), you can take the test in one of Trafikverket's cars for a fee – state this when you book.
Medical certificate and application
The medical certificate (TS8071) costs different amounts depending on the care provider, because it is not covered by the ordinary healthcare tariff in the same way as a normal doctor's appointment. Also budget for an administrative fee for the taxi licence application itself at Transportstyrelsen once you have passed all the tests.
The hidden cost: retakes
The real financial risk is not the base fees – it is retakes. If you miss the pass mark, or fail to cancel more than 24 hours in advance, you pay full price again for the same part. Two retakes often cost more than an entire preparation course, and every retake also pushes back your first pay cheque as a taxi driver.
How to budget smartly
Study until you consistently score well above the pass mark in practice tests, rather than booking the test as soon as you feel roughly ready. Passing both parts first time is always the cheapest route to the taxi driver licence.
